The 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall
standing in the living room
as my mom grabs the remote
flicks on the news
says we have to go,
to witness this great event.

American soldiers kill on American soil
a horrific tragedy
yet we ask them to go kill
and be killed
far from home
and that is heroic.

And Sesame Street turns 40.
the same messages from then still make sense now
if only more adults listened to and followed the lessons
of a yellow bird
or someone living in a can
or a pair of friends with different personalities.
Cookie Monster has had to change his tune
but he's on Google's homepage
so he still gets the fame he deserves.

climate change
no money for schools
bank robberies and break-ins every which way I turn
the immediacy is overwhelming
why won't people consider all and plan for a better future?
because surviving the present is its own epic battle

Shut off the alarm clock
get out of bed.
